What is an “OT”? Occupational therapists are licensed health care professionals who understand the health and disability issues people face over a lifetime. They are skilled at performing home assessments that identify a person’s daily routines and activities, and the barriers that impact performing them. An OT’s focus is on how people ‘occupy’ their time doing things in daily life that are important to them, in different settings, and doing them safely and as independently as possible. An OT has a strong understanding of how an individual functions in his or her living environment, which is essential for making recommendations that will enhance function and safety in that personal space. OT’s have a person centered focus, which ensures that their recommendations are individualized, and address the person’s wants and preferences, as well as their present and possible future needs.
